Meet Mr Rethnam
A commitment to your quality of life
“I believe that successful surgery is a partnership. My goal isn’t just to replace a joint; it’s to help a person regain the freedom and confidence to move through life without pain.” — Mr Ulfin Rethnam
In private practice, Mr Rethnam is known for his calm, approachable manner and clear, empathetic communication. He takes time to understand each patient’s symptoms, lifestyle goals, and concerns, ensuring that all treatment decisions—whether non operative care, injections, arthroscopy, or joint replacement—are made collaboratively and confidently.
Mr Ulfin Rethnam is a Fellowship-trained Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in assessment of hip and knee conditions, replacement surgery—including complex and revision procedures. With more than two decades of surgical experience across the UK, Australia, and India, he is committed to delivering high quality, personalised care that helps patients regain mobility, confidence, and quality of life. He is recognised for his patient-centred approach and expertise in advanced surgical techniques. Patients value his dedication to enabling better movement, pain relief, and improved quality of life.
After completing his Master’s degree in Orthopaedic Surgery in India, Mr Rethnam undertook specialist training in the Welsh Orthopaedic training programme in the United Kingdom. He later completed a prestigious hip and knee arthroplasty fellowship in Brisbane, Australia, gaining advanced expertise in complex hip and knee reconstruction and computer navigation in knee replacement surgery. Since 2018, he has worked as a Consultant at St Joseph’s hospital.
Drawing on substantial experience in computer-navigated and technology-assisted knee replacement surgery during his fellowship, Mr Rethnam is expanding his practice to offer patients robotic assisted replacement surgery. This modern technique enhances surgical precision and can offer improved accuracy in implant alignment for both hip and knee replacements, reduced postoperative pain, and potentially faster recovery. He offers this technology to suitable candidates who may benefit from enhanced precision and tailored alignment.
Academic Leadership and Commitment to Excellence
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Rethnam remains actively involved in research, teaching, and supervision of quality improvement projects. He has published widely and presented at numerous national and international conferences. His academic involvement ensures that his clinical practice remains aligned with the latest advances in orthopaedic surgery.
A Well Rounded, Person Centred Approach
Patients often appreciate Mr Rethnam’s compassionate approach and the clarity with which he explains diagnoses and treatment options. His goal is to ensure every patient feels supported, informed, and empowered throughout their care journey. Outside of medicine, he enjoys skiing, travelling, and is an enthusiastic cook, particularly passionate about South Indian and fusion cuisine—interests that bring balance and creativity to his professional life.
His NHS practice is for the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, where he also holds senior leadership roles as the HEIW appointed Faculty Lead for Trainers & Trainees.
